CHRISTY L. LUBERGER
The College of New Jersey, Ewing, New Jersey Class of 2003
Bachelor of Music in Music Education, Bassoon
(scroll down for the FUN FACTS)
I have been the Band Director at Edward H Bryan School and Merritt Memorial School in Cresskill since 2003, teaching 4th, 5th and 6th grade (until 2008) instrumental music. In 2007, I began building the string orchestra program in the elementary schools. While the orchestra program is at a halt for the time being, the band program continues to grow and thrive. I enjoy teaching all levels of music, from beginner to advanced, on different instruments. I have assisted in directing marching bands, either as Assistant Director or Woodwind Coach for the Cresskill HS Marching Band and Bergenfield HS Marching Band, until I had my first child in 2008 and being a mom took priority. My students are still very important to me!
I teach lessons privately in the northern NJ area on bassoon, piano, flute, saxophone, french horn and my latest instrument endeavor is bluegrass banjo (as a student). I work as a freelance bassoonist & pianist. Performing groups include: NYC Opera Exchange, New Jersey Symphony, New Jersey Wind Symphony, Eastern Wind Symphony, and “5 for Dinner" Wind Quintet. I am a member of NAfME: The National Association for Music Education as well as its local affiliate: the Music Educators of Bergen County (MEBCI), and New Jersey Music Educators Association.
Before coming to the Cresskill School District, I began teaching music lesson to adults and children in high school. I knew I wanted to be music teacher and tried to learn all of the wind instruments; every summer a new instrument. I studied at The College of New Jersey and graduated with Bachelor of Arts Degree and K-12 Certification in Music Education. I found the job in Cresskill one month after I graduated in December! I actually couldn't attend my graduation ceremony in the Spring because I was conducting my first ever Spring Concert in Cresskill!
While attending TCNJ, I played principal bassoon (my main instrument) in the Wind Ensemble, Pit Orchestra, Orchestra, Opera Theater, saxophone in the Jazz Ensemble, French horn in the Concert Band and took on various instruments in ska bands. Some of these groups included tours through Europe and recording CD’s by Kalmus Music.
Aside from my passion for music and teaching, I enjoy fast-paced, safe biking, reading many different kinds of books, SWIMMING and playing soccer with my husband and two children, ages 8 and 10. I am active in my community; a member of the Town Council Technology and Innovation Committee, Environmental Committee and assistant coaching. In August 2018 I moved to Oak Ridge in Morris County, further from Cresskill. We love our new home and I know it was a great move for my family, but regret having to move further from Cresskill and not being present for after school activities or evening events.
FUN FACTS:
My favorite fruit: Anjou pear
My favorite vegetable: asparagus
My favorite course in High School: Physics
My favorite meal(s): authentic Mexican food, Chicken Cordon Bleu, Steak!
My favorite music: I can't pick one style and it depends on my mood.
My favorite part of the day: dinner with family and jigsaw puzzles before homework/practice.
My favorite candy: Milk Chocolate. Reese's peanut butter cups.
I can break dance and skateboard (goofy foot). I did the long jump and ran the 400 meter in High School, setting a school record, and was also on the soccer (mid-field) and basketball (point guard) teams.
I grew up in Vernon, NJ right next to Mountain Creek Ski Resort. I loved walking through the woods to put on my skis or snowboard and cruise down the slopes. I have 3 brothers!
If I didn't become a music teacher I was going to be a marine biologist.
Enough about me. Thanks for reading!
